Drivers ages 50 to 75 represent a group with notably increased risk for accidents. As you get older, your cognitive reasoning and reaction times often slow down. Eyesight and hearing can get worse. Still, it’s very frustrating for someone who’s driven for 30 years without incident to have friends and family worry about their safety on the road, or worse, the risk they pose to other people.

For a group of people struggling with their growing dependence on other people, handing over the keys can be really tough. It can have a heavy impact on self-esteem, but also on quality of life. Why? Because you can buy someone a bus pass, or offer them a ride, but you cannot force them to take it. Staying in the driver’s seat is an excellent way to stay active for older people, and we need to use the resources at hand to help with that.

Allstate Insurance has some good and bad points, but they are leading the way in driving independence - SAFE driving independence - for their older customers. They’re also trying to make it more affordable by offering insurance discounts to drivers who take steps to make them safer on the roads. Pairing with brain fitness innovators, Posit Science, Allstate is inviting close to 200,000 Pennsylvania customers to take part in InSight(TM) training. The software program works on cognitive and visual reasoning, and specifically addresses skills the elderly need to be safe on the road.

In over a dozen studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, InSight(TM) training led to an increase in stopping distance, an increase in safer driving techniques and a greatly reduced risk to drivers ages 50 and over.

After their initial trial, Allstate Insurance hopes to offer elderly drivers a discount for completing the InSight(TM) program. For more information, contact an Allstate agent or see their website at www.allstate.com .
